Stepped House
In the design of the Stepped House, we aimed to maximize the allowable volume under the Permitted Development rules, which permitted rear extensions of up to 6 meters. The client envisioned an open, flowing, and light-filled living environment on the ground floor, complemented by additional amenities throughout the rest of the home. This vision guided our approach to the layout and material selection.
To create a bright and airy atmosphere, we strategically positioned skylights and large openings throughout the ground floor. These design elements invite natural light into the space, enhancing the sense of openness and connection to the outdoors. The thoughtful arrangement of these features ensures that light permeates every corner, fostering a welcoming and vibrant living environment.
Staying true to the character of the existing house was paramount. The new bathroom extension, positioned on the roof, is constructed entirely from zinc. This choice of material serves as a contrasting yet complementary element to the pre-existing structures, defining the roof slopes and contributing to the overall stepped appearance of the rear façade. The juxtaposition of various rear-facing extensions creates a dynamic visual interplay, adding depth and interest to the home's profile.
The bathroom extension, while devoid of traditional windows, features a large skylight that offers upward views of the sky from the bath. This design choice not only enhances the bathing experience but also reinforces the connection between the interior and the natural environment, allowing for a serene escape filled with natural light.
The Stepped House exemplifies thoughtful design that respects the existing structure while introducing modern elements that enhance functionality and aesthetics. By maximizing permitted volume and incorporating strategic lighting and materials, we created a harmonious living space that meets the client’s needs while celebrating the home’s architectural heritage.
