Casa Picos

This innovative end-of-row townhouse thoughtfully defines the corner of a tranquil semi-pedestrian street. Situated between the northwestern Madrid neighborhoods of Mirasierra and Montecarmelo, this project is Steyn Studio’s third residential undertaking in the area, showcasing our commitment to exploring unique design opportunities rather than settling for conventional solutions.

In response to the local planning regulations, which enforce strict parameters on building forms, we embraced the site’s corner position to create a distinctive architectural identity. Unlike typical two-fronted townhouses that dictate standard layouts—often featuring bedrooms flanking either side of a central stairwell—Casa Picos leverages its three open elevations to redefine interior distribution. This design choice allowed us to move away from the common dog-legged stair configuration, opting instead for a straight staircase that doubles as a lightwell. This feature draws natural light from above, enhancing the spatial experience throughout the home, including the mid-depth of the ground floor.

The roof profile of Casa Picos is a defining characteristic, intentionally designed to optimize solar energy capture. The pronounced slope culminates in a sharp termination on the northern façade, mirrored by a smaller peak that anchors the home at the street corner—hence the name "Casa Picos," which evokes the imagery of twin peaks.

The larger of these peaks houses essential systems, including battery storage and an air-source heat pump. To address the expanse of the long façade, we introduced a subtle curvature that plays with light and shadow, adding depth to the overall form. Each of the peak volumes showcases distinct tonal variations and textures, poised atop a concrete plinth that elevates the house, enhancing its presence in the streetscape.

Casa Picos integrates sustainable building practices, featuring external insulation alongside thermal bricks to improve energy efficiency. The thoughtful selection of materials, along with elevated ceiling heights and spacious room layouts, further distinguishes this home from the more standard developer-driven properties within the vicinity.

Casa Picos exemplifies our dedication to identifying and embracing unique design opportunities, resulting in a residence that not only responds to its context but also enriches the architectural narrative of the neighborhood.
